Finnish Housing Search Engines
There are numerous dedicated search engines
available to help you find property in Finland, whether
you are planning to buy or rent. Unfortunately the
majority of these are only available in Finnish,
which can be a major stumbling block. There is no magic
solution apart from learning Finnish or having
a Finnish speaker help you, but the tips and translation
tools on this page should help you stumble through
well enough to find the apartment, house, summer cottage
or otherwise that you're looking for.
Guide to Using Finnish Search Engines
Tools
First, get some tools ready which you can use
when you start your hunt. The links below will open
in separate tabs/windows:
- Print the PDF list
of Finnish real estate terms
in English. It's handy
to have this reference on paper; then you can also
take it out and read the ads in the estate agent
windows.
* If
you can't print it, open the corresponding Real Estate Terminology page.
- Open the online Finnish dictionary Sanakirja.org -
you can enter single Finnish words/terms here and
usually get a good translation
- Open the Google
Translate page - here you can translate
part or all of a page you are using in your search,
in over 50 languages. Translating Finnish online
is notoriously problematic, but it is improving.
For example, entering the address
http://www.huoneistokeskus.fi for
translation to English does obtain useful results...
and some funny ones!
These tools should be 'all' you need apart from a
search engine! Maybe even overkill, but these are handy
references to know.
Housing Search Engines
Next, open one of the search engines in the
list below. The sites which work in more languages
than Finnish are listed first, so maybe they're
all you'll need. If you do try a Finnish-only
search engine, however, you may well want to start
using your tools.
The first thing you need to do is to open
the right section of the search site, for example,
properties for
rent or properties for sale. To help,
the first basic steps for each
site are listed below.
When you reach "Enter search parameters",
you should be able to complete the search forms by
using your previously prepared translation tools! Then
click the Hae (Search) or similar button to begin the
search.
Options such as searching commercial property
have not been included in the instructions, but you
should be able to work it out with your tools if
necessary.
These sites usually have basic
information and contact pages in English,
Swedish, and occasionally other languages, so making
direct enquiries is a good alternative if you have
trouble using the search engines.
