TV and Digiboxes Explained
Finland-Wide
Cable TV Operators
Additional
Information
Cable
TV and DigiboxesPlease note
that 'cable TV' in this section refers not
only to TV broadcast over physical cables,
but also to TV broadcast "over the air".
The most common ways to receive television
broadcasts in Finland are antenna reception
and cable reception. Satellite reception
is also possible, but not common.
It is essential to
know how broadcasts are received in your building
to be able to buy the right digital receiver (check
with the building manager if you live in an apartment).
A digital receiver (usually a digibox* or digitv**)
is required to receive TV in Finland since all television
broadcasts were transformed to digital on 31st August
2007.
* A digibox, or "set top box", is a digital receiver/decoder
for use with an analogue TV. The ability to record on an internal hard drive is becoming increasingly
common in these units.
** A digitv, or "digital television",
is a television with an integrated digital receiver.
You
will recognise the correct digital receiver for your
building by its code:
DVB-T - for antenna reception; also
known as a "terrestrial digibox"
DVB-C - for
cable-TV reception; also
known as a "cable digibox"
DVB-S -
for satellite
reception; also
known as a "satellite digibox"

Cable
TV Operators in Finland (geographically)
9 television
channels are
available "for free" in Finland (a TV license is
required). Additional channels are available in a variety
of packages from cable TV operators throughout the
country. There are about 80 channels currently available,
depending on your package.
Call your local operator
for information on the packages available in your
area. Few of the following
sites have information in any language but Finnish.
Many are actually the local telephone company, which
also operates the TV service. In this case look for
the Kaapeli-tv link,
or similar. Hopefully a contact phone number is obvious;
if not, look for Yhteystiedot
(Company Information).
